As we grow older, most of us expect a few visible signs of ageing such as wrinkles, greying hair, or slower recovery after a busy day. However, one of the most significant changes associated with ageing often goes unnoticed until it begins to affect daily life: the gradual loss of muscle mass and strength. This condition is known as sarcopenia.


Sarcopenia is derived from the Greek words sarx (flesh) and penia (loss), and it refers to the age-related decline in skeletal muscle mass, strength, and physical performance. While it is a natural part of ageing, it is not something that should simply be accepted as inevitable.

Research suggests that adults can begin losing muscle mass as early as their 30s, with the rate of decline accelerating after the age of 60. Without intervention, individuals may lose between 3% and 8% of their muscle mass per decade. Over time, this can lead to weakness, reduced mobility, balance issues, and an increased risk of falls and fractures.



The effects of sarcopenia extend beyond physical appearance. Muscles play a critical role in supporting metabolism, regulating blood sugar, maintaining bone health, and preserving independence. When muscle mass declines, everyday activities such as climbing stairs, carrying groceries, getting out of a chair, or enjoying recreational activities can become increasingly challenging.


Several factors contribute to the development of sarcopenia. Ageing itself reduces the body's ability to build and repair muscle tissue. Hormonal changes, chronic inflammation, reduced physical activity, inadequate protein intake, and certain medical conditions can further accelerate muscle loss. Prolonged periods of inactivity, such as extended bed rest or a sedentary lifestyle, can also worsen the condition.



One of the encouraging aspects of sarcopenia is that it is highly preventable and manageable. Strength training remains one of the most effective strategies for preserving muscle mass as we age. Resistance exercises such as weight training, resistance bands, bodyweight exercises, and functional movements stimulate muscle growth and help maintain strength. Studies have shown that individuals can continue building muscle well into their 70s, 80s, and beyond through regular resistance training.


Nutrition also plays an essential role. Protein provides the building blocks required for muscle repair and growth. Older adults may require more dietary protein than younger individuals to support muscle health. Foods such as fish, lean meats, eggs, dairy products, soy products, legumes, and nuts can contribute to adequate protein intake. In some cases, healthcare professionals may recommend supplementation to help meet nutritional needs.

Beyond exercise and nutrition, maintaining an active lifestyle is equally important. Regular walking, balance exercises, recreational sports, gardening, and other forms of movement can help preserve mobility and functional independence.


As life expectancy continues to increase, the conversation around ageing is shifting from simply living longer to living better. Maintaining muscle health is one of the key pillars of healthy ageing and longevity. By taking proactive steps today, we can reduce the risk of sarcopenia, remain active and independent for longer, and enjoy a higher quality of life in the years ahead.
